This is My Name

Let's be honest, for one second, okay?

Everyone is selfish, even Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and the Pope.

What a horrible thing to say! Mother Teresa is a saint!

Well maybe, but are saints unallowed to be selfish?

Are you being mislead by the connotation of the word 'selfish.' Each human has a self. For example, you are reading this through your two eyes. Are you so selfish that you will not give up your eyes to a blind man?

The religious people are the most selfish ones, because they want to get their souls/spirits/bodies to heaven. They are selfish in terms of eternity, because of their selfish beliefs about a creator who hid dinosaur bones in the ground to fool us into believing the devil's theory of evolution.

In fact, selfishness is key to modern society- it fuels capitalism. But what about parental love, isn't that selfless? Well, not exactly if you talk to evolutionary theorists, who point out your genetic advantage in caring for your children- your child carries at least half of your genes! So your genes have an interest For more information on evolutionary psychology, read the "Moral Animal" and "The Blank Slate."

The point of this essay is not to place even more value on selfishness- just to point out its inevitability. Self-respect is the cornerstone of all virtues, and you are stuck in your own skull, not anyone elses. I am Joe Broderick, stuck in my skull, trying to reach out in futile words towards potential friends. Any selfish takers? :)
